Chiang Mai Zoo

Chiang Mai Zoo

A fun day out for all the family, Chiang Mai Zoo is located at the foot of Doi Suthep mountain, a short distance northwest of the city. The zoo features a wide range of animals (around 400 species) and covers an area of more than 200 acres. There is a monorail which you can ride to various parts of the zoo, as well as trams which you can just hop on and off, but be prepared for a lot of walking. If you get hungry or thirsty there are plenty of places dotted around to stop and get refreshments and food.

Special attractions at the zoo include a walk through aviary, a freshwater aquarium with a 700 meter long underwater tunnel, penguins, koalas, the Twilight Zoo, and the zoo’s main attractions – Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, two pandas on loan from China who the zoo had previously spent years trying to convince to mate, finally gave birth to a panda cub in May 2009.

Chiang Mai Zoo is open every day from 8.00am to 6.00pm. The panda enclosure opens at 9.00am. Twilight Zoo is open from 6.30pm tp 9pm. Advance booking is required for large groups. Contact: tel. 0-5322-1179, 0-5322-2283.
